Kilkenny City does the county's building
858 new homes went up around the city between 2023 and 2025, more than everywhere else in the county combined. The estates on the ring are recent stock: sound PVC cable, an earth on every circuit, and boards that date faster than the wiring they protect. The work there is capacity, not replacement. The city core is the opposite end of the same county: period and protected buildings where a rewire is careful, staged work and where we test before we say a number, because behind old plaster the readings are the only honest evidence.
Callan, Thomastown, Castlecomer and Graiguenamanagh
The market towns took a fraction of the city's building: 310 completions around Callan and Thomastown, 199 around Castlecomer. Their housing runs older, and this is where Kilkenny's 1961 to 1990 band concentrates: 10,011 homes county-wide, the bungalows and semis where the answer depends on which end of the band the house sits at. Rewireable fuse carriers with wire in them and no RCD anywhere are still common finds here, and three checks settle what is actually needed before anyone talks money.
Piltown and Ferrybank: Waterford's suburbs, Kilkenny's county
Piltown's district took 202 completions, and much of that end of the county functions as Waterford city's northern suburbs: Ferrybank sits in County Kilkenny even though it reads as Waterford. The stock there is largely estate housing from the late nineties onward, which means board upgrades and added circuits rather than rewires. We cover it on the same runs as Waterford, so a Ferrybank call does not wait for a Kilkenny City routing.
The farmhouses carry the oldest wiring in the county
Kilkenny's 8,631 pre-1961 homes are not all in town cores. A large share are rural: farmhouses that have been rewired piecemeal over decades, with a yard supply feeding sheds and outbuildings that were wired whenever they were built. On those jobs the house is only half the survey. The submain to the yard, the condition of what is in the sheds, and any pumped water supply all get tested alongside the house circuits, because on a farm the board in the kitchen is protecting far more than the kitchen.
